The Most Expensive TV Series in History

Recently, we got more information about Amazon’s adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel (1892-1973). This TV series was announced in 2017, but until now we didn’t get so much information. Finally, in the previous months, we got more information. A huge number of new actors arrived on the set, and we got a short summary of the pilot.

In the brief summary, we found out that everything will be happening in the Númenor, Misty Mountains, and the capital of the elves – Lindon. The story will be set in the time of Tolkien’s Second Age era, millennia before the events in the novel The Hobbit. The Second Age era is best known for the time when Sauron created the famous Ring, and the era itself lasted 3441 years.

When it was first announced, everyone assumed that this TV series will be the film adaptation. But the last information said that this story will be completely different than the movie. There are rumors that young Aragorn will play the main role.

Fight for the most expensive TV series

In the fight with Netflix and Moira Club, Amazon won with an offer of $ 250 million, making the rights of the upcoming TV series the most expensive in the history of TV series. If we add the cost of the production of all subsequent seasons, that number climbed to a billion dollars. By comparison, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of The Rings trilogy has invested ‘only’ $ 281 million and grossed nearly $ 3 billion.

The purchase of TV rights included an adaptation of five seasons. Already in 2019, they decided to record the second season. This could mean that we won’t have to wait too long between the first and second seasons. How Amazon will shoot all five seasons? We’ll have to wait, but the fact is that they can only put the action into the Second Age. We could see some different things in the Third Age.

John D. Payne and Patrick McKay were chosen as the creators of the series in the July of 2018. But everyone is very skeptical because they had an empty portfolio at that time. Apart from them, the creative team consists of numerous executive producers, writers, and consultants which have worked on projects such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Stranger Things, Toy Story 4, The Aviator and Hannibal.

The recording of this TV series will be in New Zealand. There they can find the simultaneous presence of natural wealth, quality film studios, and skilled staff. And they want to follow the footsteps of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogy. We need to consider that the series will be recorded on the movie original set, we can only wait to see how much this TV series will be similar to the Peter Jackson movie.
